NMMU Res' Cafeterias

Nearly dilapidated spaces which were used as dining halls for three Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University residences were revitalised with the redesign of the interiors and the improved usability of each. The project was finished in 2011. Today the dining halls at Melodi, Letaba and Oceana residences buzz with excitement and are integral to the daily lives of the students that use it.

The project brief called for the durable and vandal-proof redesign of these spaces which were in very poor condition, poorly maintained and old-fashioned. The aim was to attract students to use these spaces for dining, meeting, working and relaxing.

Subsequently the design created spaces which are now physically, functionally and aesthetically durable while reflecting the young-hearted, exciting, fresh and positive attitude and characteristics of the typical NMMU student. This was done with the use of natural materials and earthy colours as well as colourful artwork which all reflect the mature, yet young and fun atmosphere that relates to the residents.

The art was commissioned from past and present NMMU students and specialised areas such as laptop workstations were designed for contemporary use. New glass doors enhance a strong inside-outside connection and let in the maximum amount of light while affording residents a view of the gardens. All these elements add to the new open, fresh and relaxed atmosphere in each space.
